In GTA 6 you can rob far more than the corner stores of GTA 5. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN that players “can rob pretty much anything,” from a headphone shop to a bank, a payday loan office or a police impound lot. You can do these jobs solo or with Jason and Lucia together, and none of them need a scripted mission to start.
Nelson made the comments during an IGN demo published on October 7, 2026. The game launches six weeks later, on November 19. Below is what Rockstar has confirmed, what previews have reported, and what is still unknown.
What Rockstar Said About Robbing in GTA 6
Nelson used a small, specific example. “You can rob pretty much anything. So we can go into this place where you buy headphones, for example, and rob it,” he said in the demo.

He then described a plan that changed during a drive. He had set out to hit a shop, a bank or a payday loan place. On the way they passed a police impound lot, Jason pointed it out as a target, and Nelson took the detour.
That story shows how the system works. Targets come from the open world and from your partner’s dialogue, with no quest marker telling you where to go. Nelson also said the map is so large that he doubts “anybody on the team” knows all of it, as Dexerto reported from the same interview.
Which Places Can You Rob in GTA 6?
Rockstar has named five targets so far. Hands-on previews from August and September 2026 reported a few more. The table keeps the two groups apart.
| Robbery target | Status | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Headphone and electronics shops | Confirmed | Rob Nelson, IGN demo |
| Banks | Confirmed | Rob Nelson, IGN demo |
| Payday loan stores | Confirmed | Rob Nelson, IGN demo |
| Convenience stores | Confirmed | Rob Nelson, IGN demo |
| Police impound lots | Confirmed | Rob Nelson, IGN demo |
| Jewelry stores | Reported | Hands-on previews, August 2026 |
| Gang compounds | Reported | Hands-on previews, August 2026 |
| Security vans and cash transports | Reported | Hands-on previews, August 2026 |
How GTA 6 Robberies Work
A GTA 6 robbery gives you choices from start to finish. In GTA 5 you pointed a gun at the clerk and grabbed the till. VICE’s breakdown of the new GTA 6 features lists these mechanics:
- Safes: Blasting a safe open is faster but can damage what’s inside. Finding the combination takes longer and keeps more of the loot.
- Police response: Officers can wait outside and surround a store or bank if you take too long.
- Escape routes: Some buildings have a second exit you can use to get out.
- Wanted stars: Stars show as hollow outlines when police don’t know what you look like.
- Fences: Fences can sell you information, such as access codes for police impound lots.
- Stolen cars: Damage lowers a stolen car’s sale price.
Earlier previews covered the money side. Stolen goods go into a duffel bag, and you sell them to different fences depending on what you took. GTABase reported that a basic store job pays a couple of thousand dollars at most. Nelson has also said the story will “slow down or stop the flow” until you reach certain cash goals, so robberies in free roam feed straight into story progress.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5: How Robberies Changed
| Feature | GTA 5 (2013) | GTA 6 (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free-roam robbery targets | Convenience stores and gas stations | Most shops, banks, payday lenders, impound lots |
| Bigger jobs | Locked to story heist missions | Possible in free roam without a script |
| Safe options | None | Blast it open or find the combination |
| Wanted system | Five stars, no identity tracking | Hollow stars when police haven’t seen your face |
| Selling loot | Mostly instant cash | Duffel bag loot sold through fences (reported) |
| Who robs | One character at a time | Jason, Lucia or both together |
Can Jason and Lucia Rob Stores Together?
Yes. Nelson confirmed that robberies work solo or with both leads at once. In the demo, Jason reacted to the world and suggested the impound lot himself.
“Together” here means the two story characters. Rockstar has not explained how GTA 6’s online mode works, so nobody knows yet whether two human players can pull the same job.
What We Still Don’t Know About GTA 6 Heists
Rockstar has not confirmed the full list of stores you can rob. Bank payouts are also unknown. Fans keep asking about house break-ins and street muggings, and those are still rumors. The same goes for gambling: we covered whether GTA 6 has a casino after the age ratings left out the usual gambling label.
Treat any detailed robbery list you see online with care until launch day.
GTA 6 Release Date and Platforms
GTA 6 releases on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to Rockstar’s official GTA VI page. The game is set in the state of Leonida, which includes Vice City.
There’s no native PC version at launch. A report says PC players will only be able to stream GTA 6 at launch through Xbox Cloud Gaming. With a world this large, it also makes sense that people keep asking whether GTA 6 is the most expensive game ever developed.
FAQ: GTA 6 Robberies
Can you rob any store in GTA 6?
Almost. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North said you “can rob pretty much anything” and gave a headphone shop as an example. Rockstar has not published a full list, so some locations may be off-limits.
Can you rob banks in GTA 6 outside of missions?
Yes. Nelson named banks next to shops and payday loan stores as targets you can pick yourself in free roam. Payouts and security levels for banks have not been revealed.
How do you open a safe in GTA 6?
You can blow it open, which is quick but can damage the contents. Or you can find the combination, which takes longer and keeps more of the loot.
Do robberies affect the GTA 6 story?
Yes. Nelson said the story slows or stops at points until you reach certain cash goals. Robberies are one of the main ways to earn that money.
When does GTA 6 come out?
GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC release date has not been announced.
