Riot Games Announces Major Changes to League of Legends Development

0

Riot Games is making major changes to its League of Legends development team. It follows a round of layoffs earlier this year that reduced the company’s workforce by around 11 percent, firing about 500 employees. The latest announcement, made by Riot co-founder Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill, indicates that while some roles are being eliminated, the overall team size is expected to grow in the long term.

Merrill’s statement, shared via an X post, emphasized that the changes are not driven by cost-cutting measures but by a strategic shift aimed at enhancing the game’s development and sustainability. He said that the employees affected would get comprehensive severance packages, including six months’ pay, annual bonus, job placement assistance and health coverage.

This is indeed the right moment to make such an announcement considering the fact that it is exactly 15 years since the debut of League of Legends — the anniversary in itself is a reference point to the game’s evergreen popularity and the impact it has created. Merrill said the layoffs won’t affect the game’s success and evolution, and will instead be used to create a stronger and more sustainable development team.

The restructuring has cut 33 employees, 28 of which were from the League of Legends development team and five from Riot’s publishing division. This move follows a previous announcement in March, where the company revealed that its MMO game title was being “reset” due to its similarities with the main game.

The wider fallout of these changes has been reflected in the fact that former employees have increasingly spoken out, publicly. But Merrill is hopeful the team will eventually be bigger and better equipped to deliver what players need. Such as the fact that there is no point in increasing the team size if you do not have the right expertise and the right priorities.

Riot Games is ready to take League of Legends to the next level and stay at the forefront of the gaming business. The company’s approach is an indication that in an ever changing market, adaptability and innovation remain key. Though the layoffs are unfortunate, this is part of a broader plan to keep the game alive and still important.

Riot Games’ decision to restructure its League of Legends team is a strategic move aimed at enhancing the game’s development and sustainability. While the company has laid off staff, it is working on building a better and more sustainable team and is doing so to continue the game’s successful and growing legacy. With the industry evolving in the way it does, Riot Games is still making efforts to stay in the top spot.

Destiny: Rising Mobile Game Pre-Registration Now Open

0

The mobile version of Bungie’s popular first-person shooter, Destiny, is finally here, after years of anticipation. The developer, NetEase Games, has announced that Destiny: Pre registration is now open for rising. It’s a big deal for the franchise, which was created by Bungie, the makers of the Halo series, and released by Activision in 2014. This new mobile adaptation of the game is a successful spinoff of the idea of an open world shooter with exploration being the main theme of what is essentially the first game of its type.

Destiny: In Rising, we’ve set the story in an alternate timeline of the Destiny universe, introducing a new narrative, but keeping the familiar heroes and legends. All of this is similar to the original Destiny with campaign missions and six player co-op strikes. Players can expect a mix of single-player, cooperative and competitive multiplayer gameplay, as well as modes familiar to Destiny players, and new to the series.

Steps to Register for Destiny: Rising Closed Alpha Test

The closed alpha test for Destiny: Starting on November 1, rising is scheduled to begin and pre registration is now open. Players can pre register by visiting the official website, clicking on the ‘Pre register’ button on the top of the homepage and filling out the form with their mobile device details, region and email address. Keep in mind that just pre-registering won’t get you an early access since players will join a pool and some will be randomly picked to take part in the alpha test. The test is available in the beginning to players in USA and Canada, and additional regions will be added gradually.

Despite Bungie currently struggling, having laid off 220 jobs, NetEase Games has been collaborating on this mobile adaptation under Bungie’s official license. The release of Destiny: That’s a positive thing for the Destiny player base — it’s making the game easier to rise on mobile, which is a good thing.

The game boasts a shared world experience that starts off in the sanctuary of Haven, continues on in the icy ancient metro of Jiangshi and then stretches across the arid expanse of the Red Sea Rift. There will be a variety of characters players will meet, some well known from Destiny’s past and others you’ll never have seen before, all with their own unique abilities and stories. You can either play it in first person or third person perspective or with either a controller or touchscreen controls.

Destiny: But now, a new generation of Lightbearers will rise, out of the hands of mysterious Ghosts, to revive humanity and to set it back upon a course that will bring humanity prominence and insure a future. Set in the post Dark Age era (post tyranny), this new adventure sees humanity calling upon their allies once again to rally against alien forces that seek their very extinction.

Destiny fans are gearing up for the game’s closed alpha test as the excitement grows over the new chapter in the franchise. With its blend of familiar and new elements, Destiny: At Rising, we wanted to capture the magic of the original game while bringing a new mobile experience. If the game turns out to be a hit, there will be more room for mobile adaptations of popular console and PC games to spring up as the gaming industry grows.

Microsoft Settles Antitrust Lawsuit Over Activision Blizzard Acquisition

0

Microsoft has settled the antitrust lawsuit, which was brought by a group of gamers against the $69b deal to acquire Activision Blizzard.

The details of the out-of-court settlement are still undisclosed; nonetheless, it is well understood that the case was disposed of through a stipulation with prejudice, which means that the case cannot be prosecuted again. Interview respondents who were attorneys also agreed that “each party shall bear their own expenses and fees.”

This legal action was filed in 2022 in California for a group of gamers from multiple states claiming they are concerned about negative impacts from Microsoft’s domination over the gaming industry consequent of acquiring the developers of Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Candy Crush, and others. This action came in the immediate wake of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) beginning to marshal efforts to prevent the completion of the agreement, a move that was futile.

The suit also asserted that should Microsoft go through with the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, they might do what has happened in other instances, including discriminate in favor of Xbox versions of multiplayer games or even increase the prices, or even stop the distribution of some games. Specific concerns were expressed to the effect that certain classes of Game Pass users may be impacted in the event of the merger.

microsoft activision

After Microsoft’s successful acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023 changes have been observed in Game Pass. It has increasingly integrated Activision Blizzard games into the subscription service (although Black Ops 6 will be the first Call of Duty title in the main series to be released on Game Pass on the same day next month) but has also transformed Game Pass itself.

New games – such as Day One releases – aren’t part of the Game Pass updated base plan, and titles like Diablo 4, Starfield, and Call of Duty can now only be accessed through Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Not only that, the cost of Game Pass has also been raised, which most recently happened in July when the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate was increased from $16.99 to $19.99 monthly.

When Gale spoke with IGN they said that the price increase is necessary, some have predicted that Microsoft may start to add ads to Game Pass. Some of these changes are seen as a plan by Xbox to get back a portion of the $69 billion it spent to buy Activision Blizzard.

As a response, the FTC has objected to Microsoft’s Game Pass price hikes and referred to the latest Xbox Game Pass Standard as a “dumbed-down product.” The FTC stated that Microsoft was “exercising market power post-merger of Activision Blizzard with these changes,” to Game Pass.

Microsoft responded to the FTC’s filing concerning the recent increases in the Xbox Game Pass subscription fees, referring to the FTC’s claims as a “misleading clear attempt to create a distorted picture of events.” It also argued that the FTC was wrong to categorize Game Pass Standard as a ‘subpar’ version as it spreads out to include multiplayer modes.

Microsoft cut a mind-boggling 2,550 jobs from its gaming division as the global tech firm continued chewing off Activision Blizzard, and several studios are gone. Then, in February, the FTC stated that Microsoft was inconsistent with the statements it made during the Activision Blizzard acquisition when it laid off […] 1,900 employees from Microsoft’s gaming division in January.

FTC attorney Imad Abyad testified that Microsoft approached the company with the intention of causing Activision to operate as a light-tique integration studio. However, since Activision employees were the ones to be let go, Abyad argued this was the opposite of what Microsoft was previously saying. To this, Microsoft responded by stating that Activision Blizzard has planned other significant layoffs regardless of the acquisition.

NRG Valorant Coach Chet Considering CS2 Return Following 6-Month Suspension From VCT

0

Chet “Chet” Singh, the head coach behind the NRG Valorant roster, is considering returning to Counter-Strike 2 following his recent suspension from the VCT.

For the uninitiated, the 28-year-old was banned from participating in the VCT for six months, as confirmed by Riot Games in a ruling earlier today. As per the official ruling, Chet “violated Riot Games Global Esports Code of Conduct for broadcasting VoDs whose access was contingent on current status as head coach of a VCT team,” which has resulted in his temporary suspension.

Initially, Chet expressed his disagreement with Riot Games via an X post and said that he will continue streaming until the ban expires in March 2025.

A few hours later, Chet confirmed in a follow-up post that he will be exploring his options in CS2.

“With recent news I’m going to be exploring my options in CS2, if any teams are interested next year after the major DMs are open,” his statement reads.

He further confirmed that he isn’t bidding farewell to Valorant just yet, and is still open to opportunities once his suspension ends.

In the past, we saw Chet coaching several prominent North American CS teams between 2016 and 2020, finding remarkable success during his stints with Evil Geniuses and NRG.

CS2 fans will undoubtedly be looking forward to seeing Chet’s return to the Valve shooter in the future.

CS2 Map Designer Starts Working on Cobblestone

Popular Counter-Strike 2 map designer Joshua Roberts aka JFX Design to revamp the fan favorite Cobblestone that was removed during the early days of CSGO. Fans of the map are eager to dive in, even if they haven’t yet delved into all the finer elements of the revamp. It already looks fantastic.

On October 12, JFX Designs shared a post on the Counter-Strike subreddit showcasing his ongoing project. Fans were taken aback by the impressive changes made to the map which brought back the urge to play on the map once again.

To rain on the parade, the map is a work in progress and is far from actually getting implemented in the game unless Valve steps in accelerate the process. The map looks incredible on the new engine and will likely attract a lot of players if released in the game.

Players have been calling for a shake up of the maps in the Active Duty map pool but nothing has been addressed. As the major approaches, it is unlikely that major changes would be made before the end of the year but 2025 will likely introduce new maps in the pool.
