Co-founder Shares Update of Riot MMO

It has been five years since Riot revealed their intentions to enter the MMO space but little to no information on the project was revealed at the time. Fast-forward five years, the co-founder of the project has shared an update that might break the hearts of fans eagerly waiting for the same.

Marc Merrill, a co-founder of the project, has now spoken out about the project which did not leave a good impression on the fans. While other projects like Valorant have taken off, their MMO has been lagging.

“We’ve been investing so much for so long,” said Merrill, “Sort of growing this world and adding dimensions. People want to run around the world of Runeterra. And so we want to help them do that, in ways that are worth it and meaningful to them,” he added.

While it is clear that the Riot has not given up on the project it is clear that we are years away from an MMO. Merrill’s claims that the groundwork has been laid, but shaping it into a game will take years of work.

Popular Counter-Strike 2 insider and commentator Maksim “Gabe Follower” Poletaev released new Counter-Strike 2 code snippets yesterday that indicate Valve is revising their in-game compensation methodology for skin creators.

The leaks suggest that Valve is shifting from paying a percentage of each item sales, as with Counter-Strike cases, to paying artists a set sum each day if their things are included in the CS2 Armoury.

Despite the leak revealing the payment structure, it remains unclear how much will these creators make compared to the older compensation scheme. While a one-time payment would grant creators a lot of money at once, it is hard to tell if it is more than what percentage of each item sales had to offer.

Once this change goes live, Creators will likely speak out showcasing their feelings towards the new payment structure but it remains hard to assume from the outside what Valve looks to achieve with the overhaul.

ESL FACEIT Group is reportedly implementing further workforce reductions, with sources indicating that employees at their Burbank, California office are the primary focus. The company has scheduled a town hall meeting to address staff, following separate notifications to those affected by the layoffs.

According to TEA, While the precise number of impacted employees remains undisclosed, estimates suggest that the Burbank office, home to 20 to 30 individuals, will bear the brunt of the cuts. It’s unclear whether any Burbank-based employees will remain with the company, and if so, whether they will relocate to Esports Engine’s main operations in Ohio or stay in California.

The Burbank office has been a significant part of the company’s structure. Its staff became part of Esports Engine after ESL FACEIT Group’s parent company, Vindex, acquired Esports Engine in March 2023. Prior to that, these employees were associated with Next Generation Esports, which merged with Vindex on October 31, 2019.

This round of cuts follows a broader restructuring effort earlier this year. In March 2024, ESL FACEIT Group announced a 15% reduction in its global workforce, affecting an estimated 250 to 300 employees, along with the closure of several business units, including Dreamhack Sports Games and the Vindex analytics platform. Co-CEO Niccolo Maisto stated at the time that approximately 1,200 employees remained after those layoffs.  

Sources indicate that pressure from ESL FACEIT Group’s owners, Savvy Games Group (backed by the Saudi Arabian government’s Public Investment Fund), is driving the push for profitability by the end of the year. These staff reductions and other cost-cutting measures appear to be key strategies in achieving that goal.

With this in mind, we have decided that by concentrating our focus on establishing one state of the art studio in Columbus, Ohio, rather than spreading the load across two locations, it will enable us to improve the quality and quantity of the work we can deliver. As such, we will be closing down our Burbank studio and moving the team and services to Columbus. Whilst the majority of our employees who are based out of our Burbank studio will transfer to Columbus, either through relocation or remote work, a small number will be leaving EFG. We thank those people greatly for their exceptional work.

MIBR Shakes up Its CS2 Roster

MIBR has announced a roster change, bringing Breno “brnz4n” Poletto back into the starting lineup. This move comes after André “drop” Abreu was benched due to recent performance issues. Raphael “exit” Lacerda will also be resuming his role as team captain, a position he held previously.

Brnz4n’s return to the main team follows a period on the sidelines after being moved to the bench in September 2024 to make room for Lucas “Lucaozy” Neves. Having initially joined MIBR’s main roster from their academy team in May 2022, brnz4n has a history with the organization. He expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining his teammates and his renewed focus on winning.

MIBR’s recent results have been less than ideal, with a disappointing showing at PGL Cluj-Napoca. The organization hopes that this roster adjustment will provide the team with a much-needed boost as they head into the ESL Pro League 21 Play-In stage on March 1st in Stockholm. Jhonatan “jnt” Silva is expected to coach the team at the event, stepping in for Bruno “BIT” Fukuda Lima.

The updated MIBR roster now consists of:
