Counter-Strike 2: The Rightful CSGO Successor, But at What Cost?

0

On March 22, 2023, Valve sent shockwaves through the FPS gaming community with the announcement of Counter-Strike 2, the long-awaited successor to CS:GO. With the promise of responsive smokes, tickless servers, and a complete visual overhaul for all the maps in the game alongside an engine upgrade, it’s safe to say that CS2 was the most anticipated sequel to any esports title in history.

Consequently, expectations for the release of CS2 ran high—not just within the CS:GO community, but across the entire global FPS scene—as speculation ran rampant over whether Valve’s new title could live up to its legendary predecessor. After all, with CS:GO being the world’s most popular competitive shooter at the time, CS2 had some pretty massive shoes to fill.

But how well did CS2 rise to the challenge? Was it able to meet the heightened expectations set by its incredibly successful predecessor?

A Love Letter To Fans

Fortunately, Valve was able to deliver on the majority of the promises that they made to the community ahead of the launch of CS2. From a bunch of cool new game mechanics that spiced up the gameplay to maps that looked absolutely stunning, the CS:GO successor had it all.

While CS2’s initial launch was far from ideal due to certain game-breaking bugs and problems with hit registration, fans were still largely satisfied with what Valve delivered.

To call CS2 a worthy successor to CS:GO would be pretty fair—it wasn’t just an engine upgrade or a simple reskin; it redefined the Counter-Strike experience and truly felt like an entirely new game.

Improved graphics, responsive smoke mechanics, and completely reworked maps enhanced the experience for long-time fans, while the introduction of the subtick system marked a fundamental shift in how the game processed player actions, promising greater precision and responsiveness.

Despite all these new additions, the core gameplay of Counter-Strike wasn’t hindered in any form. The skill-based gameplay of the title remained intact, rewarding players for mastering aim as well as proper utility usage.

Lastly, players’ CS:GO inventories were carried over to Counter-Strike 2, enabling players to transition to the new game without losing their valuable cosmetics, giving a further boost to its massive trading economy.

A Barrier for Newcomers?

As mentioned earlier, Counter-Strike 2 wasn’t free from flaws at the time of its release. While most of the game’s issues were polished out with constant updates from the dev team, the massive barrier that newcomers had to face when trying out the game for the first time still stood strong.

Compared to other popular titles in the genre, Counter-Strike features a notably high-skill floor and ceiling, which often repels newbies away from getting into the game. The release of CS2 further exacerbated this problem, adding new and complex mechanics to a game that’s already renowned for being one of the toughest FPS games to master.

The Premier matchmaking system that CS2 brought with it aimed to create a level playing field for everyone, but it didn’t take long for Premier to be overrun by smurfs and cheaters, which in turn added to the list of concerns for new players.

Cheating is not a new thing in the world of competitive games, but Valve’s leniency with anti-cheat measures has always been a cause of frustration for the CS player base. VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) has been a staple of the Counter-Strike series, alongside several other Valve games, for years, but its effectiveness has been questioned again and again.

With the release of CS2, Valve introduced VAC Live, an upgrade to their existing anti-cheat system that was designed to detect and ban cheaters in real-time. While it was a significant upgrade over its CS:GO counterpart, reports of cheaters plaguing ranked games still persisted.

Fortunately, over the years, Valve has continued to fine-tune its anti-cheat to detect cheaters more consistently. And with VacNet 3.0 recently hitting the live servers, the community is pretty optimistic about cheaters getting banned more effectively without the serious privacy concerns associated with more robust measures like Riot’s Vanguard.

Toxicity & Gatekeeping

Toxicity & Gatekeeping CS2

Toxicity has always been one of the biggest challenges in the world of esports, and CS2 is arguably one of the worst victims of this issue.

The CS2 community is known to be particularly rough on new players, which can often be quite discouraging for newbies who want to learn the game mechanics.

The ranking system and the lack of casual-friendly game modes also add to this issue. While modes like Deathmatch and Arms Race can be great for players looking to learn the gunplay of the game, the high skill gap and unforgiving nature of ranked matchmaking can make it extremely frustrating for newbies who want to improve their skills.

While Valve has taken some steps to curb toxicity by implementing communication restrictions on players, it hasn’t been nearly enough to solve the issue, making it one of the biggest entry barriers for new players.

The Skin Market

How To Make CS2 Skins

It’s undeniable that CS2 has the largest skin market compared to any other FPS title in the world, with millions of dollars worth of cosmetics being exchanged on the Steam Market every single day, but it also has its drawbacks.

Skins in CS2 are much more than simple cosmetics, they are valuable digital assets. There are a bunch of factors that impact the price of any skin in CS2, including its wear, float value, pattern indexes, and overall rarity. This has led to a booming collector’s market within the CS2 community, where skin prices exceeding a million dollars are also not unheard of.

CS2 skins excel in accessibility as well as liquidity when compared to any other esports title, with players being easily able to buy, sell, and trade skins in seconds, whether it’s through the official Steam Community Market or via third-party trading websites. Additionally, the customization options for CS2 skins are extensive, boasting features like stickers, weapon charms and pattern variations that allow players to make their weapons truly stand out from the crowd.

However, the CS2 market also comes with its downsides. The sheer value of some skins is enough to overwhelm new players looking to get their hands on a cool skin. Even after purchasing a skin, customizing it to a player’s liking requires further investments, as applying stickers, charms, or name tags can significantly drive up the costs.

With the engine upgrade to Source 2 alongside CS2’s release, the game’s cosmetics looked more stunning than ever, which consequently elevated the demand for high-end skins and raised skin prices even further.

Verdict

We’ve come a long way since the release of CS:GO in 2012, and there’s still a lot more road to cover. To this day, Counter-Strike 2 continues to shatter its own records and reach new player peaks, proving that the franchise remains the dominant force in the FPS genre.

With millions of players tuning into the game each day, a thriving skin market, and a constant flow of new content from the devs, the future of Counter-Strike 2 looks brighter than ever.

With that being said, the heightened barrier for entry in CS2 can’t be overlooked either. While the devs undoubtedly need to make adjustments to make the game more beginner-friendly, it’s also up to us—the CS community—to improve the game’s atmosphere and make sure that new players are not being constantly bombarded with insults.

Counter-Strike is a beautiful game, and in many ways, it has defined the competitive shooter landscape with mechanics that have set the standard for other successful titles in the genre.

Ultimately, Counter-Strike 2 feels like a love letter to its dedicated fanbase—one that preserves the core essence of Counter-Strike without making drastic changes to the mechanics, but it does little to lower the barrier for greenhorns looking to get into the game.

For now, CS2 is a game that thrives on experience and commitment—at the cost of accessibility.

Marvel Rivals Devs Working To Fix Peni Parker After Unintentional Nerf

A recent Marvel Rivals patch has hit Peni Parker with a pretty major nerf, rendering her completely useless and unplayable in higher elos. Luckily, the developers behind the hero shooter have already started working on fixing the issue.

Prior to the March 13 Marvel Rivals patch, Peni Parker’s Arachno-Mines were a massive nuisance to deal with—not just because of the nature of her kit, but also because of a bug that rendered her mines invisible even when they were outside of her Cyber-Web radius.

The bug was triggered when her mines touched her webs, but landed outside of their radius. As a result, unsuspecting players would often take heavy damage seemingly out of nowhere from the mine explosions even though the mines should be visible outside her webs.

The March 13 Marvel Rivals update aimed to fix this issue, but created more bugs for the Vanguard instead. This time, however, Peni Parker got the short end of the stick, receiving an unintended yet significant nerf that made her mines almost useless in matches.

Peni Parker Arachno Mine Nerf

After the hotfix was released, several players reported that they were able to see and destroy Peni Parker’s mines even inside her webs, which shouldn’t be possible since her webs should make her mines invisible and indestructible.

Due to this bug, players were able to simply walk up to her webs and destroy the mines with a melee to prevent themselves from taking any damage, rendering Peni completely unplayable in higher ranks.

NetEase Acknowledges Peni Parker Bugs

Through an official blog post on March 20th, NetEase acknowledged the bugs involving Peni Parker and her Arachno-Mines, claiming that they were working on shipping a hotfix to the problem.

“It seems that even when entering her Cyber-Web, the mines can still be attacked and destroyed during their burrowing and explosive phases, which is definitely impacting her gameplay experience,” a statement from the dev team reads. “We recognize this as a bug.”

The company further reassured players that they’ve been able to pinpoint the cause of this issue and will update fans in the near future.

NetEase has yet to provide an estimated release date for the Peni Parker fixes. Until the update is shipped to the game, it is advised for Marvel Rivals players to avoid playing Peni Parker completely, since her kit can now be countered by anyone who’s aware of the bug.

FaZe Eliminates Astralis from Blast Premier Lisbon

Following an embarrassing loss against Virtus.pro, FaZe Clan has bounced back against Astralis as they fight their way out of the lower bracket and now find themselves in the next round of the Blast Premier Lisbon. Following their struggles, FaZe looks much better with broky firing on all cylinders and EliGE finding his footing with the roster.

VETO

  • Astralis removed Anubis
  • FaZe removed Inferno
  • Astralis picked Train
  • FaZe picked Nuke
  • Astralis removed Mirage
  • FaZe removed Ancient
  • Dust2 was left over

Map 1: Train; Pick: Astralis; Winner: FaZe Clan;

Coming off a 13-0 defeat, FaZe set their sights on changing the narrative. Starting their pistol round with a fine retake, FaZe went on a spree of 9 rounds before Astrais could win their first and only round of the half. Utter dominance ushered on Astralis as FaZe Clan’s defence was next to impenetrable on thanks to broky hitting everything the Danes through at him. Dominating the first half with 11 rounds to their name, FaZe Clan let a few rounds slip early on in the second half. Despite Astralis recovering 6 rounds, FaZe had enough of a buffer from the first half to close out the game at 13-7. Goes without saying, broky putting up 22 frags was key in FaZe enjoying a solid CT side.

Map 2: Nuke; Pick: FaZe Clan; Winner: FaZe Clan;

Quick A rush to open up Nuke for FaZe but lost to a force buy from the Danes in the following round. FaZe responded with a force-buy conversion of their own and went on to bring home a series of rounds before Astralis managed to make it a little competitive winning 4 rounds by the end of the first half. FaZe lost the pistol round and got back on the board in the first gun round and never gave the momentum back to Astralis. Winning all the remaining rounds, FaZe Clan closed Nuke with a 13:6 scoreline.

While CadiaN‘s arrival did manage to get the roster to a better position, it is far from what the organization has achieved. While having the best Danish players in the team, Astralis has been underperforming for a while now, and it is high time that they look to address these concerns.

How to Fix Rocket League Error 71?

Anyone who’s spent a decent amount of time in the Rocket League arena has likely encountered the annoying “connection timed out” error which is also known as Error 71. This error comes up due to a connection issue that occurs when the game times out while attempting to connect to the servers. However, there are a few ways you can fix it. In this article, we will explore all the ways to fix the errors in the game. Keep reading till the end to find out.

So, without wasting further time let us get back into the action.

How to Fix Rocket League Error 71?

Rocket League Error 71

There are several ways to fix Error 71 in Rocket League. Let’s get in them one by one:

Check Server Status

Firstly, you have to check the server status because if the servers are down, there is nothing you can do on your end. You will just have to wait for the servers to come back online.

For console players on Xbox One or PS5, a quick check of the platform’s server status can reveal any ongoing issues. However, if you play it on a PC, click here to check out the server status.

Router Reset

Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. A quick router reset can clear out temporary network glitches that are disrupting your connection to the Rocket League servers. Here are the steps:

  • Locate the reset button: It’s usually a small hole on the back of the router labeled RESET.
  • Press and hold the reset button: Use a paperclip or pin to press it for 10-30 seconds.
  • Wait for the router to restart: The router’s lights will blink and then stabilize.
  • Reconfigure the router: You’ll need to set up your Wi-Fi name (SSID), password, and other settings again.

Port Forwarding

This one is a bit tough but interesting if you are a tech-savvy person. You have to forward the ports used by Rocket League. This basically creates a direct line of communication between your network and the game servers, bypassing any potential roadblocks that could be causing delays or timeouts.

Open your router’s settings by typing the IP address (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1) into your browser. Then log into it.

After that, go to the Port Forwarding section. Here, you’ll need to enter the specific ports required by Rocket League for your platform:

Rocket League - Steam: TCP: 27015-27030, 27036-27037; UDP: 4380, 27000-27031, 27036

Rocket League - PlayStation 4: TCP: 1935, 3478-3480; UDP: 3074, 3478-3479

Rocket League - Xbox One: TCP: 3074; UDP: 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500

Rocket League - Switch: TCP: 6667, 12400, 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920; UDP: 1-65535

After adding these ports, restart your router to apply the changes.

If you are still facing the error even after trying all the methods, you can contact Rocket League support for further help. If any of the above-mentioned fixes worked for you, let us know which one finally fixed it for you in the comment section below.

Tarik Declines Million Dollar Offer Amid Esports World Cup Controversy

0

In a surprising turn of events, prominent esports figure Tarik “tarik” Çelik has reportedly turned down a million-dollar offer to participate in the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025. His decision has stirred widespread discussion within the global gaming community, drawing attention to ongoing controversies surrounding the event.

According to reports, Tarik was approached with a lucrative deal to participate in the Esports World Cup 2025 as both a featured player and content creator. The deal, estimated at around one million dollars, was aimed at utilizing his popularity and massive following to bolster the tournament’s visibility and reach among fans.

The issue with Tarik’s stand is, ironically, his team Sentinels is participating at the event and is an official partner of the Clubs that is being sponsored by Esports World Cup.

Why Tarik Declined Esports World Cup Invite

While Tarik has not officially commented in detail on his decision, several potential reasons are believed to have influenced his choice:

Past Payment Disputes

The 2024 edition of the Esports World Cup reportedly faced financial irregularities, with multiple accounts from staff, teams, and talent alleging delayed or missing payments. These reports may have raised red flags for high-profile personalities considering involvement in the 2025 edition.

Brand Integrity and Community Responsibility

As a major name in the esports world, Tarik’s brand is built on trust, credibility, and community engagement. Aligning with a controversial event could risk alienating parts of his fanbase or impacting future sponsorship opportunities.

The response to Tarik’s decision has been mixed:

Supporters have praised him for taking a principled stance, commending his decision to prioritize ethics over financial gain. Whereas, critics argue that esports should remain separate from politics and that engagement with global events can sometimes serve as a platform to influence positive change.

Regardless of where one stands, the controversy has reignited conversations about accountability and transparency, in parts of all, players, organizations and event organizers in global esports tournaments.

As the industry continues to globalize, players and creators are increasingly finding themselves at the intersection of business, ethics, and personal values.

MOUZ Beats Falcons to Start Their Blast Open Lisbon Campaign

MOUZ has booked their spot in the next round of Blast Open Lisbon. Having already bested Falcons in EPL, MOUZ has pulled off a double, beating them here to start their campaign. Supreme form coming into the event, MOUZ has posted a statement of victory to announce themselves as serious contenders.

    VETO

    • Falcons removed Nuke
    • MOUZ removed Anubis
    • Falcons picked Train
    • MOUZ picked Ancient
    • Falcons removed Inferno
    • MOUZ removed Dust2
    • Mirage was left over

Map 1: Train; Pick: Falcons; Winner: MOUZ

Starting well on the defense, MOUZ put the pistol on the board and set the Falcons on the back foot. Train being a CT-sided map gave the Falcons enough room to come back after winning 7 rounds on the T side. Starting their defense with a win, they failed to gain momentum as MOUZ pulled ahead with a few rounds of their own. Winning 6 rounds in a row, MOUZ took control of the game they found themselves 11-9 up. Failing to make a comeback, MOUZ closed the game with a close scoreline of 13-11. Jimpphat led MOUZ to a win on Falcons’ pick with 18 kills to his name and posting an IR of 1.21.

Map 2: Ancient; Pick: MOUZ; Winner: MOUZ

With Ancient being one of their better maps, MOUZ got off to a blistering start. With Falcons’ defense having little room to breathe, MOUZ had their aim and their tactics on point which led to them winning 9 rounds leaving Falcons little room to mount a comeback. Winning the pistol round they did manage to bring a few rounds back but failed to level as MOUZ pulled in their first gun round of the defense in Round 18. While Falcons did manage to cut the game close MOUZ managed to shut the game down. Both maps went close which shows that the game could have gone either way but it was MOUZ who pushed it over the line.

With their 3rd big loss in a row against MOUZ, NiKo’s signing feels to be going in vain. The Falcons are closer to the exit than the next round of the tournament despite playing together for quite a while. Changes are needed and with the major approaching, time is of the essence. While Falcons will have another shot in this tournament and a disappointing result might take them out of HLTV’s top 10.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs. However, the playoffs will be played as a single-elimination bracket.

However, the Chinese teams may be absent from the EWC Valorant event because of the conflicting scheduling with VCT China.
