The Dota 2 Esports World Cup 2026 found itself hitting the headlines recently after the Esports Integrity Commission (ESIC) suspended two members of PTime (formerly PlayTime) for violating its code of conduct.
The suspensions in question were handed out to mid laner Oswaldo “DarkMago” Herrera and coach Juan “Vintage” Angulo.
The news came hours after the postponement of PTime’s Survival Stage match against Vici Gaming. According to the ESIC, the decision followed an early-stage review that flagged possible violations of its Anti-Corruption Code and its rules governing player conduct.
While DarkMago is simply barred from competing, Vintage’s penalty is more severe, as he’s now blocked from taking on any coaching, management, strategic, or team-support duties for competing squads.
With both men unable to play, PTime could no longer field an eligible roster and was pulled from the tournament, handing Vici Gaming a forfeit win and a spot in the next round of the Survival Stage.
It’s important to note that nothing has been formally proven at the time of writing, and the ESIC has stated that the action is simply a protective measure rather than a guilty verdict.
“These are interim measures only; no final finding has been made,” ESIC said in a statement.
However, that hasn’t stopped fans from theorizing. Clips and stats from DarkMago’s recent group-stage performances have started circulating online, with some fans pointing to uncharacteristic decision-making as potential evidence.
Since the incident, PTime has issued a statement insisting that its leadership had no role in or knowledge of any wrongdoing, and said that it has launched its own internal review while stepping the two men back from their duties in the meantime. The org further said it would cut ties with the involved players outright if the allegations turn out to be true.
For now, the Dota 2 community is waiting on the ESIC to complete its work, while the broader scene braces for what could become yet another chapter in the game’s long and complicated relationship with competitive integrity.
