CSGO agent skins are a nightmare for colour blind players

An avid CSGO player of five years has decided to call it quits to the game after the implementation of agent skins.

The month of November 2019 shook up the CSGO community by witnessing the release of an in-game operation after two years. The Operation Shattered Web had also implemented new agent skins into the game which could be obtained as rewards for reaching certain levels in the operation pass.

The new addition was soon facing resentment from the community as some of them were causing visibility issues across several maps like Overpass or Cache. Valve was quick to address those issues not by altering the agent skins, but by changing the ambient lighting of the maps themselves. However, one particular issue was still prevalent even after the changes were implemented to fix the visibility problems.

Reddit user u/csgopleasehelp has shed light on the problem his colour blind problem was facing and which ultimately led him to quit CSGO as a “last resort.”

He states that his friend, who he introduced to CSGO almost 5 years prior to the incident, suffered from deuteranomaly which is the term for red-green colorblindness. His condition made it almost impossible for him to spot the models in some parts of the maps, which led him to quit the game.

The Reddit user also mentions a simple solution to this major problem which doesn’t require outright disabling the agent skins.

“We understand that it’s simply not realistic to add an option to disable all custom models in csgo,” he said. Instead, he opted for a minor adjustment which can potentially fix the problem entirely.

According to him, adding something of contrasting colour to the agent skins on them would enable colorblind players to identify the models in every place. He also made small edits in paint to elaborate on the solution.

Chances are, you struggled to find the model, even if you aren’t a colour blind player. Here’s where he was.

However, identifying the character becomes a lot easier when you add a small contrasting colour around the neck and helmet of the model.

Deuteranomaly is the most common form of color blindness accounting for about 8% of the male population. Not only is this small change really easy to do from Valve’s side, but it’ll also help improve the visibility of the models across all the maps, preventing such colorblind players from quitting CSGO.
