Genshin Impact players residing in the United States will soon have to complete an age verification process if they wish to continue playing the game.
The mandatory age verification for Genshin Impact comes after the settlement between HoYoverse and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
For the uninitiated, the FTC filed a lawsuit against HoYoverse, the developer behind hit gacha titles like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, alleging that the company’s monetization practices unfairly targeted children.
The case was settled in January 2025 for $20 million. As part of the settlement, HoYoverse is now required to implement a mandatory age verification system for all Genshin Impact players in the United States.
HoYoverse Confirms Age Verification System Coming To Genshin Impact in the US
Through an announcement posted on the official Genshin Impact website on May 7th, HoYoverse confirmed that the age verification process will be rolled out to all US players by May 20th.
Genshin players in the US who fail to verify their age before July 18, 2025, will face the following actions:
- Account suspension
- In-game friends and chat records will be deleted
- No further notifications post-suspension due to inaccessible account information as required by law
Additionally, Genesis Crystal packs in Genshin Impact will now clearly indicate the exact number of Intertwined Fates included, along with the real-money cost of a single gacha pull. U.S. players will also gain the option to purchase Intertwined Fates directly using real currency.
It’s safe to say that, overall, these changes are a win in the books of consumers. While the measures come as a direct response to regulatory action, they nonetheless mark a shift toward better transparency in gacha monetization.
