Sony’s PlayStation 5 launched on 12 November last year in North America, Japan, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, and South Korea followed by a worldwide release a week later, and sold out in a matter of seconds. Despite the lack of availability, Sony has managed to sell 4.5 million units of PlayStation 5 worldwide at launch, beating its predecessor, PlayStation 4’s record of 2.1 million units in 2013 and became the fastest-selling console in the US in terms of total money spent. These figures are inclusive of both the digital and the standard editions of the console.

According to Sony’s earnings report, they sold 3.3 million PS5 units in Q4 2020, which ended on March 31, 2021, while 1 million units of PS4 consoles were sold during the same quarter. PlayStation Plus subscribers also rose up by 14% than the year before as there are now 47.6 million subscribers.

Speaking of games, Sony has sold 58.4 million first-party titles and 338.9 million ‘full game software’ for both PS4 and PS5 in the entire financial year with just 7.9 million and 61.4 million games were sold in Q4 2020 itself.

While these sales figures are impressive, the Indian market only saw around a total of 5,500 PlayStation 5 units, as reported by IGN India, causing a lot of potential buyers to resort to grey markets to get their hands on the console while some opted for an Xbox Series S/X console instead. The interesting fact here is that only the Standard Edition of the console was sold as the digital edition pre-orders were delayed indefinitely.

Sony recently announced that its PlayStation Now game streaming service now supports 1080p resolution for a select few games (more to be added in the future).
