PGL Bucharest Opening Matchups Announced

We are just a week away from PGL Bucharest, the second PGL event of the year, but unlike Cluj, there won’t be a crowd present to enjoy the top teams playing and fighting for the million-dollar prize pool.

Cluj-Napoca was a major success, and CS action is coming back to Romania for a studio-only tournament between 16 teams from April 6 to 13. While several top teams are present, the big 3 of MOUZ, Spirit, and Vitality are interestingly skipping this one, giving others a shot at tournament glory.

The tournament opens up with a Swiss elimination bracket where teams securing 3 wins will move forward in the next round of playoffs. $1.25 million on the line, and without the Spirit, MOUZ, and Vitality present, this presents the opportunity for a new team to bag their first tier-1 trophy of the season.

While the opening matches are somewhat one-sided, they set the stage for more competitive matchups in the second round of the tournament.

All the matches on the opening day have clear favorites, and it’s only a matter of time before the lesser-known teams take an early exit from the group stage. The second round of matches will be tough, given that several of the big names will be facing each other, and only the ones to win all 3 of their matches in the first stage will go through.

MongolZ vs 3DMAX can be dubbed as the most interesting match of the opening day, given that both teams on their day can cause massive upsets. 3DMAX has lately been a dark horse, turning heads at big events while MongolZ has evolved into a threat for the EU juggernauts moving into 2025.

With most of the teams taking part showing poor form lately, MongolZ may not find another situation where they are heavily favored to be the tournament favorites for the PGL Bucharest. Winning here would be the second tier-1 trophy in the history of the organization since YaLLa Compass in 2024.

A new CS2 controversy has surfaced during the BLAST Open Lisbon. Falcons coach Danny ‘Zonic’ Sørensen failed to find words during a tactical timeout at a crucial juncture of the game.

Tournament organisers often post clips from the team’s internal communication to give viewers interesting insight into how it is done at the game’s highest level. While these clips cut off the tactical stuff, the rest of it helps the audience feel the vibe of the team at that point.

During a 4-hour-long series between the Falcons and VP in BLAST Open Lisbon, Zonic called a tactical timeout as Falcons were blowing away their lead. BLAST managed to post a section of the clip where Zonic fails to figure out a tactical solution, or so can be deduced from that instance. BLAST posted the clip on Twitter, elicited mixed reactions, and therefore sparked a community-wide debate.

The clip was deemed “funny” by the fans, given that Zonic is one of the highest-paid coaches, if not the highest, and he failed to support his team when they needed him the most. While the clip only showcased a few seconds, it portrayed Zonic as unfit to be a coach of a roster of this calibre.

TaZ and mithR’s posts suggested that incidents like this render teams less likely to let TOs share their clips.

Zonic is leading one of the most expensive rosters in the world, and unless they deliver on big stages, hate will keep coming his way. The CS community is not as forgiving as the others, which makes Zonic’s job much more difficult. As things stand, BLAST has not taken steps to remedy the situation yet, and it looks like it will pass with time.

The Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) 2025 Birmingham Major, which took place from March 27th to 30th at the bp pulse LIVE venue in Solihull, Birmingham, has experienced a significant viewership decline compared to previous events. According to Esports Charts, the event achieved an all-time peak of 287,987 spectators, a significant drop from the 435,503 all-time peak viewers achieved during the 2024 Year’s first Copenhagen Major.

This decline in viewership is compounded by other figures. The Birmingham Major notched 4.1 million watch hours and 121,687 average viewers for its 33-hour broadcast time. In comparison, the 2024 Copenhagen Major amassed 4.9 million watch hours and an average of 159,854 viewers. ​

The 2025 RLCS season saw a modified format, diminishing the number of global LAN events from three to two Majors and the World Championship. With the decrease in tournaments and money prizes, less involvement from both players and spectators has been seen.

Allowing all regional competitions to take place at the same time might have led to viewers being forced to choose between concurrent matches, possibly lowering total viewership.
Adjustments like reducing the minimum age of players from 15 to 13 and redistributing the prize pool have been criticized by the community, which might have affected viewer interest.

In spite of the general downturn, the Grand Final between French esports team Karmine Corp and North American team The Ultimates was the most viewed game. Karmine Corp’s games, specifically, drew 1 million watch hours, an indicator of the team’s heavy following.

Additionally, the match remains in the player’s history and can break ongoing win streaks with no compensation for momentum or time lost.

What Are the Limits on Rollback?

A major point of contention is whether there is a limit on how much RR can be refunded. According to reports, there appears to be a cap — possibly tied to each Act — on how much RR can be restored. Riot has not publicly defined this threshold, creating confusion and dissatisfaction among competitive players.
