Xbox Is Now XBOX

Microsoft changed its official Xbox account name to XBOX on May 15, 2026, after a fan poll showed a clear majority wanted the all-caps spelling back. The change is part of a wider brand reset under new CEO Asha Sharma.

What Actually Changed

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma ran a poll on X asking fans a simple question: “Xbox” or “XBOX”? Out of 19,176 votes cast, the all-caps version won with 64.8% of the total. Microsoft then renamed the official Xbox account on X to XBOX.

At the time of writing, Xbox’s accounts on Bluesky and Threads still use the mixed-case version. This is a marketing move, not a legal rename. XBOX will not appear on official documentation going forward.

Why All Caps Again

The all-caps styling is not new for Microsoft’s console business. The original Xbox logo used all caps, and console logos for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S carried the same convention. Microsoft gradually shifted to mixed-case “Xbox” in its marketing and corporate communications.

The all-caps motif harks back to the brand’s early, edgy days. As branding firm Lippincott’s Michael Guerin told AdWeek, the updated logo “taps into a strong sense of nostalgia for Xbox. By reintroducing the early-2000s-era green and adding a sleek new sense of dimension, it marks a clear shift away from the minimalism of the previous logo refresh.”

The volume of Reddit threads, articles, and social media impressions generated by a simple capitalization change shows what the move means to fans. Many see XBOX as the more assertive approach they have wanted from the brand.

Part of a Bigger Reset

The XBOX rename is one piece in a series of changes Sharma has made since taking over as CEO in February 2026.

On April 23, Sharma and chief content officer Matt Booty published an internal memo called “We Are Xbox.” It retired the Microsoft Gaming name that had been in use since 2022 and brought back the standalone Xbox identity, along with a new glossy green logo.

The Microsoft Gaming umbrella was introduced in 2022 alongside Microsoft’s bid to acquire Activision Blizzard, supporting a push toward cloud gaming and mobile. Campaigns like “Everything is an Xbox” and “This is an Xbox” came from that era. The strategy faced internal resistance and failed to reverse declining hardware revenue.

On services, Game Pass Ultimate dropped from $29.99 to $22.99 per month, and PC Game Pass fell from $16.49 to $13.99.

The visual changes go further than just caps. As part of its update, Microsoft unveiled a redesigned logo returning to the classic green color and glossy design from its previous minimalist style. It also announced the revival of Xbox FanFest.
