North American esports franchise NRG Esports has launched a new Valorant development program in partnership with Maryville University by establishing the NRG Academy to take part in the North American Valorant Challengers League (VCL). This was made official through their social media handle today. The reason behind this move is to fill the gap between enthusiasts and professionals.
The entire academy roster, with head coach Matthew “mCe” Elmore, consists of talented players: Adam “Ange” Milian, Caide “chloric” Heaton, Tanner “geeza” McGhee, Austin “RENZ” Dickman, and Yahya “shondex” Amani. Most players come from Maryville University, which has an elite squad with collegiate experience, making for an exciting time in the VCL. It starts competing on 19th January 2026 as the development academy for NRG, which supplies the VCT players.
This collaboration needs no introduction, as it has solved how pro players can train while also pursuing studies. Players from eligible academies are entitled to an educational scholarship at Maryville, which allows them to play in its collegiate scene as they continue training at a professional level as well. Maryville is home to some of North America’s best collegiate teams, with victories in League of Legends and Valorant championships, which have resulted in former teammates Sajed “Sajed” Ziade and Michael “Cryogen” Luu going on to compete at an LCS level.
The signing comes on the heels of NRG’s recent reappearance in a League of Legends esports circuit, acquiring DarkZero Dragonsteel and joining tier-two competition in NACL. The signing adds depth to an already competitive roster at NRG for the world of Valorant, which has had shifts in its main team following events in 2025.
The combined focus of competition and education by both NRG and Maryville University helps build lasting careers, which can produce champions for the LCS and VCT in League of Legends esports.
