Sony’s Latest PS3 Update Leaves Some Consoles in Limbo

Sony has rolled out a new system software update for the PlayStation 3, version 4.93, on March 18, 2026. It seems that the latest system software for the PS3, as described by Sony, is acting erratically, especially on older or modified consoles, as users are finding their disc drive non-responsive or games not loading, despite a successful installation.

In terms of the system software itself, the latest version for the PlayStation 3, version 4.93, is described as a small but important security fix that updates the Blu-ray encryption key for the console, as well as plugging potential jailbreak holes. Sony is keeping up their annual software release schedule for the 20-year-old console, stating that it is necessary for Blu-ray playback functionality, as well as for “security, stability, and usability.” As usual, the system software requires 200MB of free space on the HDD or a USB drive.

Based on community reports and the information presented by PlayStationLifestyle, the current update seems to cause the disc drive of some consoles, especially modded and/or older consoles, to get stuck in a state of limbo, where the drive’s tray motor is constantly active, but the console is not actually reading the inserted media. This is reminiscent of the soft-locking that occurred with previous firmware updates, especially when the drive key was not correctly recognized by the console, causing the PS3 to get stuck on the loading animation.

For the affected consoles, the best solution at the moment is likely that, if the user is going to update the console at all, they should do it manually via USB, as opposed to allowing the auto-update feature to occur, especially if the console is known to have mod exploits or an unreliable drive. In the end, the consoles that get stuck may need hardware replacements, showing the extent to which Sony’s patches are making the PS3 a finicky bit of legacy hardware for media collectors.
