India’s mobile gaming charts have seen a notable shift, and this time, it isn’t another battle royale title leading the pack.
According to the latest Google Play Store rankings, Honor of Kings has climbed to the #1 position in the Top Free Games category in India, overtaking long-standing leaders in the market.

At the time of writing, Free Fire MAX sits at #4, while Battlegrounds Mobile India is positioned significantly lower at #26, highlighting a clear shift in current download trends.
A Chart That Tells a Bigger Story
What makes this movement particularly interesting is not just the rankings themselves, but the context surrounding them.
The current Top Free Games chart reflects a mix of casual and mass-market titles. Alongside Honor of Kings at #1, games like Ludo King (#2) and Cricket League (#3) continue to dominate due to their broad accessibility and local appeal. Within this landscape, Honor of Kings stands out as the only core competitive multiplayer title leading the charts.
That alone signals something unusual.
Breaking Into a Battle Royale-Dominated Market
For years, India’s mobile gaming ecosystem has been shaped by battle royale titles.
Games like Free Fire MAX and BGMI have not only dominated downloads but also built entire ecosystems around esports, content creation, and community engagement. Their influence has extended far beyond the charts into how mobile gaming itself is perceived in the country.
Honor of Kings reaching #1 does not immediately dismantle that dominance, but it does introduce a meaningful disruption. Unlike its competitors, Honor of Kings is not a survival shooter. It is a 5v5 MOBA, built around structured gameplay, defined roles, and strategic team coordination.
A Different Kind of Player Engagement
Battle royale games thrive on unpredictability and scale, where each match unfolds differently based on positioning, loot, and survival.
MOBAs operate differently. They are structured, repeatable, and deeply strategic. Matches follow a defined flow, allowing players to improve over time through coordination, decision-making, and role mastery. In global markets such as China and Southeast Asia, this format has proven to be highly sustainable for long-term player engagement and esports development.
India, however, has largely remained a battle royale-first market. Honor of Kings may be testing whether that preference is beginning to evolve.
Early Momentum or Long-Term Shift
The timing of this surge also matters.
Free Fire MAX continues to hold a strong position at #4, while BGMI remains active despite its lower ranking. Both games still maintain massive player bases and established ecosystems.
This is not a case of a new title filling a vacuum. Honor of Kings has entered a crowded and competitive market and still managed to reach the top position within a short period.
The key question now is whether this momentum will sustain.
What This Means for Indian Esports
Honor of Kings is not entering India as just another mobile game.
Globally, it already operates within a structured esports ecosystem, with large-scale tournaments and established competitive circuits. Its expansion into India includes plans for local tournaments and international representation.
If player interest continues, this could introduce a different kind of competitive structure to the Indian market, one that prioritizes long-term team development and strategic gameplay over high-variance formats.
For now, Honor of Kings sitting at #1 is a snapshot. But it may also be an early indicator. For years, the Indian gaming industry has been trying to recreate the success of battle royale titles. This time, the breakthrough may not come from repeating the same formula. It may come from something entirely different.
