The release of the 39.40 update has introduced fresh content to Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 1, including the return of familiar characters and the debut of the Lock-On Assault Rifle. This new firearm offers unique tracking mechanics designed to counter mobile opponents on the Golden Coast island.
As the second weapon of its kind to enter the game, the Lock-On Assault Rifle functions differently from standard automatic weapons. Below is a guide on where to locate this rifle and how to utilize its two-phase targeting system effectively.
Where to Find the Lock On Assault Rifle
Epic Games has made the Lock-On Assault Rifle widely available across the map. Players can obtain the weapon through several standard loot sources:
- Loot Chests: Available in standard containers throughout the island.
- Floor Loot: Found randomly on the ground in points of interest.
- Supply Drops: Dropped from the sky during matches.
- Vending Machines: Purchasable from specific machines using gold bars.
The rifle appears in rarities ranging from Rare (Blue) to Legendary (Gold). Unlike some high-tier items in Chapter 7 Season 1, there is currently no Mythic variant of this weapon, meaning players do not need to defeat a specific boss to acquire it.
How the Targeting System Works

The Lock-On Assault Rifle operates through two distinct phases: the Targeting Phase and the Burst Phase. This mechanic requires a different approach compared to traditional “spray and pray” tactics.
Phase 1: Targeting
When a player aims down sights (ADS), a unique reticle appears on the screen. To initiate the lock-on sequence, the player must keep the enemy target within this specific zone. As the target remains in the reticle, small icons will begin to charge. A full lock-on is achieved once four icons turn red.
Phase 2: The Burst Fire
Once the lock-on is confirmed, pressing the fire button releases a burst of bullets. These shots are guaranteed to hit the target. The weapon can charge up to four bursts at a single time.
Limitations and Strategy
While the tracking feature provides high accuracy, it comes with specific constraints. The lock-on connection will break if the opponent moves behind cover or travels beyond the 50-meter range.
The weapon is particularly effective against enemies utilizing high-mobility items such as the returning Shockwave Grenades and Wingsuits. Its ability to track fast-moving targets makes it a strong alternative to weapons like the Deadeye AR, especially during engagements in open terrain on the Golden Coast.
