FromSoftware will redefine its celebrated universe with the upcoming Elden Ring: Nightreign, releasing worldwide on May 30, 2025. This self-contained game departs from the classic Elden Ring formula with an introduction to a cooperative roguelike format that focuses on cooperation and tactical survival within a three-day in-game rotation.
Located in Limveld, the procedurally generated version of Elden Ring’s Limgrave, every session provides a random landscape with randomized enemy placement and loot. Nightfarers, the players, navigate this changing landscape, adjusting their strategy to the changing environment.
Gameplay Mechanics
Made for three players or fewer, Nightreign focuses on cooperative play. Each Nightfarer has distinct abilities and ultimate attacks, promoting players to play off each other’s strengths. Nightreign features new mechanics like wall-jumping, Spectral Hawks used for quick traveling, and a revival mechanism in which fallen allies can be revived through special attacks. Most interestingly, the game does not have fall damage, so players have the freedom to explore more aggressively.

Though optimized for three-player groups, the single-player option is extremely challenging because of the absence of difficulty adjustment.
Nightreign has its central gameplay based on a three-day cycle:
- Day 1 & 2: Factions explore Limveld, scavenge resources, and face increasing dangers.
- Nightfall: The Night’s Tide drives the players closer to each other, increasing combat encounters.
- Final Night: Teams encounter the Nightlord, a challenging boss demanding coordination and readiness.
Play is session-based, with each session taking around 35-40 minutes, and character progress resetting after every session. Players do gain Relics—persistent upgrades that last from one run to the next, though.
Players have eight different Nightfarer classes to select from, each with its playstyle:
- Ironeye: An archer well-versed in ranged combat.
- Raider: A close-combat warrior inspired by the Vikings.
- Executor: A heavy-hitter class with high-damage melee strikes.
- Revenant: An assumed necromancer with powers to control the battlefield.
Progression is linked to the player’s earnings of Murk, the in-game currency, spent on equipping upgrades and unlocking permanent rewards.
Nightreign demands an online connection in its multiplayer mode. The network settings must be compatible, and a particular configuration (NAT Type 3 on PS5) may disrupt online access.
