CD Projekt Red has released the free PS5 Pro Enhanced update for Cyberpunk 2077 today, April 8, 2026. The update brings three graphics modes, AI-powered 4K visuals via PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), and advanced ray tracing powered by BVH8 technology.
CD Projekt Red confirmed the update is solely focused on allowing the game to take advantage of the expanded hardware capabilities of the PS5 Pro. No new in-game content is included.
Three Graphics Modes to Choose From
Players on PS5 Pro can choose between three distinct modes. The first is Ray Tracing Pro, which offers all available ray tracing enhancements and is the most visually advanced version of the game on console. It includes traced reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting, targeting 40 FPS on VRR-enabled displays and 30 FPS on others.
Performance mode focuses on delivering the highest possible frame rate. On displays with VRR, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro reaches up to 90 frames per second while maintaining high image fidelity.
Ray Tracing mode sits in the middle, offering select ray tracing features while targeting 60 FPS, designed as the sweet spot between visuals and performance.
PSSR and BVH8: What They Actually Do
PSSR processes each pixel individually using advanced AI to upscale the image. According to CD Projekt Red, the result brings every detail of Night City, from thermal katanas to vehicles on the street, to sharper life.
Kuba Knapik, CDPR’s VP Global Art Director, said the studio added BVH8 (8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy) to bring more advanced ray-traced lighting, shadows, and reflections to the game, helping bring the team’s original artistic vision to life.
According to Knapik, lighting is a core part of Cyberpunk 2077’s visual identity, particularly how Night City shifts from day to dusk under neon corporate signage. The BVH8 implementation brings that lighting closer to the developers’ original vision for the world.
A Change from CD Projekt Red’s Earlier Stance
This update marks a notable shift for CDPR. Back in 2024, CD Projekt Red said it had no plans to introduce a PS5 Pro update for Cyberpunk 2077. The studio has since reversed that position.
The PS5 Pro Enhanced update is described as the largest technical upgrade for the console version of the game since launch, with improvements to textures, shadows, and overall image fidelity.
The update is available at no extra cost to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers through the Games Catalog. PS5 Pro owners who already own the game also get the update for free.
As of May 2025, Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 35 million units globally since its December 2020 launch. CDPR has also confirmed there are no plans for additional DLC or expansions, with the studio now focused on pre-production for Cyberpunk 2.
