Why Did Valve Introduce the Genesis Terminal?

The new Genesis Terminal has been the talk of the town for CS2 players, and while some like the idea, social media is filled with community members pointing out the plethora of challenges that this new system brings.

Games like Valorant boast a Night Market for players to get their skins, but such mechanics would never have been able to be popular among CS2 players, given its thriving skins market. CS2 has a whole unofficial ecosystem for players to get the desired skins more efficiently than the official market. On the surface, a system like this should not fare well against a fully functioning market, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

What many assumed to be fixed pricing, Valve has ensured that skins will be priced based on current market demand, making them dynamic in nature and thus killing a major upside that if the market went high, Genesis Terminal could get you a skin for cheap. Cheap skins are the only way the new update will be able to pull in players looking for skins away from 3rd party providers.

With little to no upside, there is no apparent reason for gamers to turn to Genesis Terminal for their skins unless Valve has plans to make changes that present this as a better deal for them. As of now, this remains a fancy addition to the game with no apparent benefits, as the Steam Market and third-party aggregators still stand as better options.
