India officially recognises Esports as a part of “multisport event”

The Indian government has officially recognized esports in the country. Esports will now be a part of the “multisports event” category in India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports .

Under the Cabinet Secretariat, the addition of “esports” was notified under the sub-heading Department of Sports under, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.

The notification was sent on December 23rd, 2022 marked on memo No: S.O.6062(E).

Esports and its acceptance all around the world is a very tricky story as some countries celebrate it like any other sport and some countries put restrictions on it due to its alleged "addictive" nature.

India has been a part of the global esports circuit since the very beginning but despite the huge popularity, the average number of participation was always low as compared to other regions.

This was revolutionized when PUBG Mobile was launched in the country and VALORANT became the flag-bearer for PC esports in India.

Currently, the rate of esports events in the country is at an all time high and amidst this all, the Indian government has shared a big news of officially recognizing esports.

Esports will now be a part of the "multisports event" category in India under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports and a section related to "matters relating to online gaming" is added under MeitY as well.
