Twitch has been accused of being greedy by serval community members for adding a “Purple Screen of Death” to their embeds across various websites, preventing users to watch streams directly from 3rd party websites.

For those who don’t know, Purple Screen of Death is encountered by users when they try to watch streams on 3rd party websites through their embeds. Websites such as HLTV use these embeds to directly stream professional Counter-Strike matches on their websites, given that their websites are a no-brainer for the analytics of pro CS. Recently, such embeds are getting blocked by Twitch that forces them to go to the main website to continue watching.

One of Twitch’s founding members in Ben Goldhaber has stated “About 2 months ago, Twitch began implementing what is being dubbed the ‘Purple Screen of Death’ (PSoD). The PSoD is a mandatory, non-skippable 30-second interruption that is placed in ALL embeds making for a poor user experience.”

Rod Breslau aka Slasher stands firm on his point that Twitch has done this out of their own green and to hurt platforms like HLTV and Juked, under the facade of fighting against viewership inflation. Like Slasher, several others have expressed the same grievance, generating a massive influx of hate against Twitch.

More often than not, several viewers have nothing to with the Twitch community, such people make use of the embeds to directly watch matches on 3rd party websites that Twitch wasn’t much of a fan of which explains their decisions of adding the PSoD. Forcing viewers to use the tools provided by Twitch contributes to a poor user experience leaving it up to Twitch to remedy the issue.
